how low is low? I can grow it in 2ft tank with 36W before. That would be about 2W per gallon

Grown it with 60W in a 2ft high tank. Nice and green. My estimation is that would be equivalent to about 45W in a 18" high tank or 30W in a 12" high tank.

hi all,

My Blyxa Japonica are doing quite ok (no yellow leaves, no melting ) in 3ft tank with 36W lamp. pH7, without CO2. However they started to melt after I added in another 55W tube. Could it be the changes in the lighting that cause it to rot?

Thanks

Yes. No CO2. Add light, you need to add everything else including CO2.

3ft with 36W? that way too low. Probably only the plant that right under the tube can survive.

How long does Blyxa Japonica with you?

You probably have some light coming in through the window.

Almost 2 months. Initially still maintain green leaves. After I add in another 55w tube, they melted within 2-3 days. Some kind of spongy things appear above the roots.

Then it is as Stan mention. When you add light, plant will photosynthesis faster thus require more nutrient and CO2.

allow me to share my shallow experience with BJ....

i have 2 tanks with BJ in them for 2-3 months ....

Tank 1: about 16g on 55w with Co2 for 8 hours daily. (with ferts)
BJ condition: Greenish and partially red on the new leaves, but they then to grow high and big (trying to grow them small and low). any idea how to do it?

Tank 2: about 6g with 9w of lighting for 8 hours without Co2 (no ferts or whatever)
BJ condition: Dark green and really really slow growth. They are not melting but just surviving and lately i see new leave emerging. But this tank is place next to the window so they will received natural sunlight.

Quite an interesting plant. If you ask me how to grow them, hey, i don't have a clear and precise clue, just play around as they are quite a hardy plants. I guess it's all about trial and error

2 versions of small. 1 is malnourished and another is healthy and fairly compact.

It's almost impossible to keep it small and healthy because it will keep dividing/branching when it's doing well. So you have to keep splitting and replanting.

It's a tad smaller in longer photoperiod and high intensity light but it also looks brown red.

I saw almost purple color blyxa japonica at ASW post. Probably because it is under ADA MH bulb, the green tint cause the red look purple.
