Bonsai's can be coaxed to move a certain direction with wire.

If you look closely at Norbert's tank, there's some differences. First his rocks and the big patch of white sand. He also has hairgrass to contrast colors and shape too. Not just colors, contrast in shapes is important so as to make the tank less monotonous.

Hmm, wires? This one can try actually.

I think got one type come with plastic cover, not expert, but can explore in free time. If can meaning no need use driftwood for moss. Can make tree shape or anything.

Fake tree idea not appealing to me. Just feels fake?
Well whatever works perhaps. Like poly bg's. Grown out of it very quickly.

More on golden section, apparently you can fold sections[copy] if you have a panoramic tank/composition.

http://goldennumber.net/design.htm

So i think if you had a 5 or 6 ft tank you can position two squares and sandwich a larger rectangle in the middle.

The lines are not limited to diagonals and you can overlay one after another from the point source that you choose. By having a point source you would have created the focus point from which all the other points are radiating from it. to create a coherent and pleasing design.

Hi stan ,

Does the triangular shape has anything to do with the Golden Section ?
Its merely impossible to keep 1 species of schooling fish in 1 tank when you know SLS...

As far as I know it's the proportions of the triangle that is made with the GS rules that makes it visually appealing. Same goes for other shapes.

So, can i say that if you can see a lot of triangles in the tank , it means i m going the right path ? I was thinking of drawing the golden section and all the lines.. and from there.. try to make as many visible triangular shapes as possible . Is this the correct way ?

How many triangular shapes normaly to make a nice looking tank ? Or am i having the wrong perception of the Golden Section.

  confused

I'm not sure what you think but all I can say is there are different types of triangles. If you don't draw your triangles derived from the basic a/b=1.618 then chances are you don't have a great layout.

By the way, I noticed that GS are 2D only, if we consider our tanks in 3D with depth, does GS or any rules say anything about 3D placements?

.

After thinking about this for a long time[old already]. I think when doing the aquascape for the photo one must set your own camera in front of the tank to guage the 3D effect of your scape.

The 3D effect is best represented when diagonal lines are drawn from the 4 corners of the tank to a vanishing point somewhere off centre preferbly where the verticle GS line is.

If you can enhance these lines you can achieve a tank that looks like it has very good depth.

Here is an uncropped picture for you to crop and test your skills at framing with these notes in mind.

just to make life easy, there is a free phi calculator here:

http://www.thismanslife.co.uk/main.asp? ... phiculator

Our way of calculating is bit different from most website cause our total lenght is fix.

Say tank lenght is 74.

So is 74cm/2.618

Then you will have 28.2cm : 45.7cm

Hope this help :D

Haha, didn't realise math and art relate so closely.
Furthermore to explain art with math requires a lot of calculations.[too many IMHO! ]
